2007 Showcase

The Canadian Language Industry Showcase returned to Gatineau for its 2007 edition, and it was a resounding success. Held last November 30, the event gathered language
industry suppliers (translation and interpretation companies, language schools, and language technology firms) alongside private- and public-sector buyers.

AILIA was innovative last year, offering a more complete program lasting an entire day. Two plenary sessions were held in the morning on vital issues for our industry: standards for the Canadian language industry, and government procurement of language products and services.

Some twenty businesses, agencies and associations active in the industry participated in the Products & Services Exhibition, which was attended by nearly 200 visitors.

In the afternoon, participants attended sessions targeting each industry sector, which covered topics such as the challenges of interpretation, globalization and translation, e-
learning, speech processing, trends in language training, and best practices for language schools.

During the dinner, AILIA presented its first awards of recognition to those who have contributed to our industry’s well-being and growth. The winners in last year’s new awards
program were the following:
  • Lola Bendana, Award for Outstanding Contribution in Translation;
  • Sharon Curl, Award for Outstanding Contribution in Language Training;
  • Daniel Gervais, Award for Outstanding Contribution in Language Technologies.

Keynote Speakers
  • The Honourable Mauril Bélanger, the Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier and Official Opposition Critic for Canadian Heritage, Francophonie and Official Languages
  • Karen Fowlie, Associate Vice‑President of Product Services at Cognos Incorporated
  • Michael Murphy, Executive Vice‑President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce
